Alkionides in Cyprus:

Alkionides Charity was formed and registered in Cyprus in 1998 with the objective to give aid to those families and individuals who find themselves in the most desperate of situations and to help them get through the most difficult days. The Charity in Cyprus helps patients and their families with travel expenses to the UK but the extra costs to cover accommodation, food and transport are enormous. We feel that it is enough to have to deal with your child’s serious illness and should not have to worry about financial problems. Many of these families are on welfare benefits.

Since our foundation we have:

  • Co-operated closely with the government welfare services in order to assist families awaiting benefits, facing serious illness or other difficulties.

  • Supported a large number of able students from families afflicted by severe illness or on welfare who attend colleges in Cyprus or are studying abroad.

  • Provided the first computerised communication system for motor neurone patients in Cyprus which led to the purchase of 4 more systems with the help of the Falcon Social Committee and PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

  • Equipped a special room to be used by blind/disabled children at the Blind school.

  • Set up a charity shop (6 Loukis Akritas Avenue,Pedieos Building, Shop no.15) which  provides many families with free clothing, toys and household goods. A paraplegic young man is employed at the shop.

  • Purchased a much needed machine to be used by cancer patients at home as well as oxygen cylinders for this purpose.

  • Purchased a machine to be used for physiotherapy at the children’s ward of the Makarios Hospital

  • For seven years, Alkionides provided a summer recreation programme for children with special needs from families on welfare. The centre also provided summer employment for students on Alkionides part-scholarships and one of them has been employed there on a full time basis since graduating in 2004.

Alkionides in the UK

Alkionides UK was formed in 2006 and is a registered charity with the Charity Commission for England and Wales.

Alkionides UK aims to help the families undergoing treatment in UK hospitals, sent by the Cyprus government who cover their medical costs.

The Charity's objectives in the UK as stated in the constitution are:

  1. The relief of financial hardship of needy patients and their families sent by the Republic of Cyprus for medical treatment in UK hospitals, by making grants of money for providing or paying for services or facilities not otherwise provided for.

  2. To promote research for the public benefit into the groups of persons who are in need of medical help and to disseminate the useful results.

Since 2006,  Alkionides UK were in constant communication with the High Commission department of social services in order to assess the enormous problems and help in emergencies.

Some of our recent activities:

  • Established our "nest" in Central London to provide free accommodation for disadvantaged patients and their families.

  • Helped patients who found themselves in desperate situations in London, with telephone support.

  • Raised funds by organising various events, including concerts, Greek evenings, Christmas carols and summer garden parties .

  • Protested to the European Commission about the serious problems facing patients receiving treatment between European member states and highlighted the problem.

  • Articles published in Greek London newspapers and letters to hospitals helped to raise awareness in order to organise volunteer help and sponsorship.

Alkionides UK is a non-profit charitable organisation made up of dedicated volunteers who give their time and effort in order to help our compatriots who are sent to the UK for treatment and have to face enormous expenses and difficult times. We hope to implement a system whereby accommodation and transport is available through the generosity of the Cypriot community.
